Oral appliances (Bruxism and sports)

Grinding or clenching your teeth can result in significant facial muscle pain as well as causing excessive wear, cracks and fracture of your teeth. We offer custom-designed splints and other treatment modalities, such as a botulinum toxin type A injection for nocturnal bruxism, which research shows is an effective treatment for nocturnal bruxism. Customised occlusal splint should be designed and made by a dentist and it should be checked regularly for its fit and wear.

Another cause of  dental trauma most frequently occurs during sports activities; the damages that result to the teeth, gums and jawbone often require a long rehabilitation and large financial burden. ADA and Sports Medicine Australia recommends that every sports participant of any age or sex wear a dentist-fitted, customized mouthguard, as boil-and-bite mouthguard versions provide little to no protection and inhibit dialogue. Sports that require the use of mouthguards even for practice sessions or training include AFL, boxing, Rugby league, Rugby union, basketball, soccer, netball, hockey, cricket, water polo, lacrosse, softball, skateboarding, trampoline, cricket (wicket keeping or batting without a helmet), water skiing, and snow ski racing. Mouthguards should be refitted and reviewed annually by a dentist.
